First Lesbian Marriage in Costa Rica after same-sex marriage made legal

Earlier this month, Costa Rica legalized same-sex marriage. A few couples had registered immediately so that they can get hitched once the ruling is in effect. Alexandra Quiros and Dunia Araya became two of the first same-sex couples to marry.

Alexandra Quiros and Dunia Araya were among the lovebirds who tied the knot on Tuesday, holding a marriage ceremony in Heredia.Though the entire world is shut down because of the ongoing global pandemic, it did not stop weddings to take place. Quiros and Araya immediately took advantage of the new law and current condition and had a private quarantine ceremony.

Costa Rica president Carlos Alvaro Queseda ahead of the deadline before the same-sex marriage became legal, tweeted, “In a few hours, same-sex couples and their families will have the same rights as any other couple or family in this country. Together, under the same flag, let’s build a better nation.”

And after few hours of the law came into effect he tweeted reaffirming his support. He wrote, “Costa Rica officially recognizes equal marriage. Today we celebrate freedom, equality, and democratic institutions. May empathy and love be the compass that allows us to get ahead and build a country where all people fit.”
